About us
We are an NHS foundation trust that provides mental health, community and physical health, wellbeing, learning disability and autism services to the people of Barnsley, Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield and community physical health services to the people of Barnsley. We also provide low and medium secure (forensic) services to the whole of West Yorkshire.
Over 1.22 million people live in the communities of Barnsley, Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield from a range of diverse backgrounds. We aim to match the community’s needs by providing personalised care that puts the person first and in the centre.
The Trust is here to help people reach their potential and live well in their communities by providing high-quality care in the right place at the right time. We continue to strive to involve people and enable them to have greater control over their own care, working in partnership with the community and voluntary sector. Playing our part in building resilient communities is at the centre of everything we do.
We work with other local NHS organisations, local authorities, government departments and voluntary organisations to provide high quality health care to people in our area. Working in partnership is very important to us as it enables us and our partners to provide more efficient, streamlined care that truly meets the needs of local people.
Working in partnership also means working with the members of our foundation trust, who can have a say in how we run the Trust and how they wish our services to be developed. Over 9,000 local people have joined us as members, and our staff are members too.
We are committed to helping join up care wherever possible. We are an integral partner in both the West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire integrated care systems, including the mental health, learning disability and autism provider collaboratives in both systems. We’re involved in provider alliances and place-based partnerships across Barnsley, Calderdale, Kirklees, and Wakefield, committed to joining up care for people. We also provide some low and medium secure (forensic) services to the whole of Yorkshire and the Humber and are the lead/coordinating provider for the West and South Yorkshire adult secure provider collaboratives.
To provide the flexible, individually tailored care that local people have told us they want, we work from a variety of sites as well as with people in their own homes. Over 90% of our services are community-based and are well supported by inpatient services for when people need care or assessment in a hospital setting.
The Trust, which was first established in 2002, now employs around 4,700 staff, in both clinical and non-clinical support services, and has a turnover of just over £400m.

Our partnerships
Our place in the health and care systems
To help people live well in their communities we understand that services need to be joined up, responsive and delivered as close to people’s homes as possible. We know that to achieve this we need to work together across the whole health and social care sector. We are committed to helping join up care wherever possible and are working in partnership on a local level in each of our areas to make this happen.
The map below shows the areas we operate in and the partners we work with:
Integrated Care Systems
We are partners in the West Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership and the South Yorkshire Integrated Care System. Integrated care systems (commonly referred to as ICSs) are partnerships of organisations that come together to plan and deliver joined up health and care services, to improve the lives of people who live and work in their area.
Integral to the smooth running of ICSs are Integrated Care Boards (ICBs), which provide a local focus and help commission and support local services. We are a part of all of the ICBs in our areas.
Provider collaboratives
We are also a leading partner in a number of provider collaboratives across the ICS areas. These include the:
- South Yorkshire Mental Health, Learning Disability and Autism Alliance
- South Yorkshire Adult Secure Provider Collaborative
- West Yorkshire Adult Secure Provider Collaborative
- West Yorkshire Adult Eating Disorders
- West Yorkshire Children and Young People’s Mental Health
- West Yorkshire Mental Health, Learning Disability and Autism Collaborative
Provider alliances
We are committed to the drive to join up care on a local level too. So we are a leading partner in a number of provider alliances across our areas. Provider alliances bring together partners in local areas who are committed to joining up services across different organisations to create a more seamless patient journey
These include the:
- Barnsley Community Health and Care Alliance
- Calderdale Cares
- Wakefield Integrated Care Partnership
- Wakefield Mental Health Alliance
We work in a partnership system and aim to always be a good partner. Our commitment to working collaboratively with our partners is reflected in our strategic ambitions.
